今日特地去位於跑馬地的F11攝影博物館參觀《Hong Kong the way it was》展覧,看了荷蘭攝影師Ed van der Elsken(1925-1990)於1959-1960年期間在香港拍攝的過百張相片。

And the most interesting photo I found is this one – 3 working class men wearing traditional Chinese pants with western leather belts! The usual way of wearing these Chinese pants is the following:

First, the pants have to be properly folded around the waist, like the man with hat standing in the middle.

Second, one has to use a long piece of clothes to wrap around the waist so that the pants won’t fall. There was no elastic nor button nor buckle on these pants at that time.

And finally, the pants’ extra fabric around the waist have to be folded down to cover up the wrapping waistbands.

However, on this picture, that piece of wrapping waistbands were replaced by western leather belts. And not only that, instead of hiding the belts, the men purposely showing off their belts! This unusual Chinese-western combination is kind of special and unique at that particular time in history. After that, less and less people wearing this traditional Chine
