Originated from Yu Zhiding (1647-after 1713) “Flowers, fruits, vegetables and insects” handscroll, HKMoA Xubaizhai Collection.

Designing a hydrangea floral button is tricky. In such a small area, too much details is technically not possible and lose focus. Too simple design looks boring and cannot bring out the characteristics of the flower – density. Yu Zhiding’s painting shows me how to balance all these. I am particularly attracted by his strokes – he drew his hydrangeas as if he wrote Chinese calligraphy! In my floral button, I tried to mimic his strokes and used 2 colours to create depth and feeling of density.
While I was working on this floral button, the hydrangeas in Hong Kong was blooming. A closer look at the petals, they are actually not that “round” and have kind of a square shape. Yu captured this with his interesting and inspiring strokes.
